Harry Cannon - Appraiser

Harry completed his BA at the U of M, Duluth in the spring of 1980, majoring in anthropology. Two years later, he began his professional career in jewelry sales with the national leaders Gordon's & Zales Jewelers, covering the entire gamut of sales, purchasing, training, and managing. He was selected as one of the six members of the "dream team" to open the Mall of America's Gordon's in August 1992. Harry's retail industry experience allowed him to develop a keen eye for detail and a deep understanding of descriptive jewelry writing.

After fulfilling a 2-year commitment to remain with Gordon's Jewelers as part of repayment for GIA training tuition, Harry branched out as an Independent Appraiser. No longer under the Zales Jewelers banner, he pursued similar work with numerous retail jewelers, auctioneers, attorneys (Estates, dissolvement of assets, Fair Market), private insurance agents, as well as local Police providing forensic or expert testimony. His background as a business owner provided valuable knowledge of understanding individual business owners as clients.

He has been committed to the trade for over four decades and independently for over three decades. Throughout his career, Harry remained dedicated to excel in customer satisfaction, especially explaining complex information. His skill set will certainly come in handy after retirement, but he hopes that will be several years away. Harry has entertained thoughts of teaching on a larger scale or possibly writing a subject book of gemological interest.

In the early 80s, he was captivated by a strange word, "birefringence," and was thrust further down the gem discovery black hole. The field of gemology has never waned to spark his interest of discovery even after forty years. It truly has been a blessing and privilege for Harry to perform in the arena of Gems & Gemology.
